London Arbitration Partner John Savage Appointed Queen’s Counsel

LONDON, Jan. 12, 2017 — John Savage, a London-based partner in King & Spalding’s international arbitration practice, has been appointed Queen’s Counsel (QC) — an award for excellence in advocacy known as “silk.” Savage is the third partner in King & Spalding’s London disputes team to take silk.

Savage has 25 years’ experience representing clients in more than 180 international arbitrations. He joined King & Spalding in 2010 as part of the firm’s launch in Singapore and served as managing partner of the Singapore office until late last year, when he relocated to London. Savage is ranked in both Chambers Global and Chambers Asia. His current caseload includes leading the representation of Samsung C&T in a multibillion-dollar series of arbitrations concerning the Roy Hill iron ore project in Australia, and leading the representation of Shell in its $3 billion ICSID arbitration against the Republic of the Philippines concerning the Malampaya gas-to-power project.

Reggie Smith, head of King & Spalding’s Global Disputes practice, said: “The rank of QC is a highly-respected accolade. John has established himself as a market-leading international disputes advocate with a broad, global practice, and his appointment to silk is a great achievement. We congratulate him.”

Savage joins two other King & Spalding disputes partners among the QC ranks. In January 2015, London partner Tom Sprange QC was appointed to silk, while the firm recruited Stuart Isaacs QC to the London office the following month.

Garry Pegg, managing partner of the London office, added: “The fact we now have three QCs in our London office underscores the firm’s commitment to offering our clients advocacy of the highest calibre in-house, in both international arbitration and court litigation. It also is recognition of the quality of our expanding London-based disputes team, which currently has eight partners representing clients in high-stakes litigation and arbitration around the world.”
