King & Spalding Expands Energy Transactional Team in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, September 1, 2015 — King & Spalding announced today that international energy and infrastructure projects and finance lawyer James K. Alford has joined the firm’s Global Transactions Group as counsel in the Washington, D.C. office. Alford comes to the firm from the Washington, D.C., office of Locke Lord LLP.

“We are thrilled to have Jim join King & Spalding and to be able to tap into his experience as a key advisor to energy and infrastructure project developers internationally, as well as here in the U.S.,” said Ken Culotta, head of King & Spalding’s Global Transactions Group. “In particular, his longstanding experience handling client matters in Latin America and his related agency finance expertise will be extremely valuable to our clients.”

Alford has more than 30 years of experience in advising U.S. and non-U.S. clients in the structuring, development, financing and execution of energy, infrastructure and construction projects, with a particular focus on Latin America.  He augments the firm’s energy-focused transactional practice and extends what is already a strong Latin America team, added Culotta.

Alford’s practice focuses on planning, development and financing of renewable energy, public infrastructure, utility and real estate projects, as well as the establishment of public-private partnerships, strategic alliances and joint ventures. He has also advised public and private entities on obtaining early-stage funding, project and structured financing, loan guarantees and other forms of credit enhancement from U.S. and multilateral agencies, including the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the Inter-American Development Bank and the U.S. Export-Import Bank.

“I’m pleased to be joining King & Spalding,” Alford said. “The firm provides a first-rate platform for international energy and infrastructure transactional work in Latin America and globally. I look forward to the additional benefits this will provide my clients and working with colleagues to contribute to those practice areas.”

King & Spalding’s Global Transactions Group has been recognized by numerous legal industry publications as among the strongest in the world. Law360 selected King & Spalding as Energy Practice Group of the Year and as Project Finance Group of the Year for 2014; Petroleum Economist named King & Spalding its 2014 Energy Advisory Firm of the Year: Legal; and Chambers USA selected King & Spalding as one of five finalists for its 2015 Nationwide Projects/Energy Firm of the Year.

Alford earned his B.A. from Ohio Wesleyan University and his J.D. from New England School of Law. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Connecticut Bars, and of the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association and The National Council for Public-Private Partnerships.
