American Lawyer Honors King & Spalding With Global Finance Deal of the Year: Projects Award

NEW YORK, July 19, 2016 — The American Lawyer has named the Jazan ASU project, for which King & Spalding served as the sponsors’ lead international counsel, as the winner of its Global Finance Deal of the Year: Projects award, and has named King & Spalding lawyers on the project as honorees. The annual Global Legal Awards “honor all law offices that played a substantial role in the most distinguished international work,” according to the publication.

The Jazan ASU matter was one of the most important infrastructure deals of 2015, with King & Spalding client ACWA Holding of Saudi Arabia (as well as U.S.-based company Air Products) achieving financial close of the largest financing of an air separation unit (ASU) project anywhere in the world. The US$2 billion Jazan ASU project was groundbreaking in that it was the first-ever ASU to be financed exclusively on an Islamic finance basis.

The King & Spalding team on that deal was led by partner Leroy Levy with support from partners Mike Rainey, Mona Katigbak, Simon Rahimzada, Jill McWhirter and Zaid Al-Farisi; counsels Mohammad Al-Ammar and Alex Blomfield; senior associates Usman Ahmad and Rory Connor; and transactional specialist Gina Bunker. Project Finance International named the project its Middle East and Africa Industrial Deal of the Year, and IJGlobal named it the Middle East and North Africa Petrochemicals Deal of the Year.

Global Legal Award winners will be honored at a reception on Sept. 26 in New York City.
