People

Jonathan is an experienced appellate attorney and Ph.D. computer scientist whose practice focuses on appeals, issues, and counseling at the intersection of technology and law. He has particular expertise in patent law. Over the past three years alone, Jonathan has handled over a dozen patent-related appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where he clerked for the Honorable Jimmie V. Reyna. He also routinely briefs trial courts and agencies on complex legal and technical issues arising in patent disputes. Beyond patent law, Jonathan handles matters concerning copyright, privacy, cybersecurity, and other areas of technology law, as well as those concerning more traditional areas, such as administrative and constitutional law.

Jonathan has secured numerous victories before the Federal Circuit in recent years, including two in the ongoing Safe Skies dispute, which Law360 characterized as “definitely breaking new ground” in the area of divided patent infringement. Last year, Jonathan also notched wins for NCR in patent appeals concerning ATM technology and for Google in an appeal concerning Internet-advertising patents. Super Lawyers Magazine named Jonathan one of Washington DC’s Rising Stars for Intellectual Property in both 2018 and 2019.

Beyond patent law, Jonathan has engaged appellate courts on diverse technology issues ranging from software licensing to extraterritorial digital search, and he has counseled clients on business decisions implicating complex IP licensing obligations. Jonathan has also obtained notable victories for his pro bono clients. Recent examples include reversals at the Seventh Circuit for a prisoner alleging constitutional violations and at the Eleventh Circuit for a debtor undergoing bankruptcy. The Supreme Court affirmed the Eleventh Circuit win unanimously.

Jonathan earned his JD cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as president of the Intellectual Property Law Association. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, San Diego, where his research focused on large-scale and distributed computing. He earned his B.A. in computer science from Colby College, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and with departmental distinction.
