King & Spalding Recruits Regulatory Foods Partner Smitha Stansbury

WASHINGTON,  July 30, 2014 — King & Spalding has recruited regulatory foods lawyer Smitha Stansbury as a partner in its FDA and life sciences practice in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Stansbury joins King & Spalding from Squire Patton Boggs.

“Smitha has developed a unique and impressive skill set and a depth of experience in the complex, specialized area of regulatory foods law, which will serve and benefit our clients,” said Mark S. Brown, leader of King & Spalding’s FDA and life sciences practice group.  “She is a natural complement to our existing FDA and life sciences team and will help us further develop our work in the foods area. We are thrilled she is joining the firm.”

King & Spalding food law partner Frederick H. Degnan noted, “Stansbury’s arrival continues the firm’s longstanding focus on providing food law expertise to clients—a focus that began with the opening of the firm’s Washington, D.C., office in 1979 and the arrival at the firm a year later of Michael R. Taylor, who currently is deputy commissioner for foods of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.”

Stansbury focuses her practice on regulatory matters before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Federal Trade Commission and other federal and state regulatory agencies. She has deep expertise on issues relating to the FDA’s regulation of food, especially matters involving food safety, labeling and advertising. Stansbury also has substantial experience in providing regulatory advice on the development, promotion and sale of foods, dietary supplements, tobacco products, pharmaceutical drugs, cosmetics and medical devices. She received a J.D. degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and a B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Stansbury said, “I am very excited to join the team of talented FDA and life sciences lawyers  at King & Spalding and look forward to building my practice and helping to grow the firm’s FDA food business.”
