Global Arbitration Review Ranks King & Spalding Among Top Five Global Firms For International Arbitration Expertise

NEW YORK, March 21, 2016 — Global Arbitration Review has named King & Spalding among the top international arbitration practices in the world. The firm has maintained its fifth-place ranking in the top 30 firms that appear in the publication’s 2016 GAR 30 report.

“King & Spalding built its name on results,” the publication noted, adding that it has “one of the largest and most active practices operating today.” In the last 16 years, King & Spalding’s international arbitration practice has grown from a small group in Houston to “become an 80-strong enterprise that is now regularly found in the top tier of arbitration rankings. … As the practice has evolved, the client list has become more diverse, now even including the occasional government.”

“We are pleased with this recognition from GAR,” said Ed Kehoe, head of King & Spalding’s international arbitration group. “We’ve worked hard and have achieved some excellent results for our clients, and it’s gratifying to hear praise from them as well.”

GAR quoted Martin Lythgoe, deputy general counsel for King & Spalding arbitration client Duke Energy, as saying the firm’s work was “outstanding,” and “reflect[ed] in very solid terms our position in a very cost effective manner.”

In recent months, some of King & Spalding’s most notable international arbitration matters have included several new cases against Argentina; a dispute against India brought by Malaysian satellite TV group Astro; and matters on behalf of investors regarding renewable energy subsidies in Spain and Italy.

The GAR 30 ranking is based primarily on the number of arbitral hearings that a firm is involved in as counsel over a two-year period. The research assesses merits and jurisdictional hearings and the amount of money at stake in each case, as well as the number of hours billed to arbitration by the firm’s lawyers. The ranking also takes into account the number of pending cases in which the firm’s lawyers are sitting as arbitrator; and the number of individuals who feature in GAR’s sister publication, Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration.
