ATLANTA, Oct. 20, 2016 — King & Spalding is pleased to announce that Jay D. Mitchell, the former chief legal officer and corporate secretary of Piedmont Healthcare, has joined the firm’s Healthcare Practice in the Atlanta office as senior counsel.
Mitchell’s practice will focus on health system affiliations, acquisitions, ventures and related regulatory issues; regulatory compliance oversight, audits, and investigations relating to physician relationships and statutory requirements of the Stark Law, the Anti-kickback Statute and the False Claims Act; health system governance; and legal and internal processes for effective compliance programs for hospitals and physician groups.
“Our healthcare clients will benefit tremendously from Jay’s in-house experience at both for-profit and non-profit healthcare institutions,” said Jay Harris, Jr., co-head of the firm’s Healthcare and Life Sciences practice. “We are excited to welcome him to our team.”
Mitchell’s professional background includes the private practice of healthcare law and service as corporate counsel for Hospital Corporation of America and for the Resolution Trust Corporation (FDIC). He served for 14 years as chief legal officer of Piedmont Healthcare as it grew from a system of one hospital to seven hospitals. In addition, Mitchell has served as the chair of the Health Law Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association. He has lectured on healthcare law topics for the Georgia Bar, the Georgia Hospital Association and PLI Education Services. He has served since 2004 on the board of the Skyland Trail Mental Health Foundation. Mitchell received his undergraduate degree from Hampden-Sydney College, with studies at St. Anne’s College, Oxford University (England), and his J.D. from the Mercer University School of Law.
“As a client, I came to know King & Spalding well and was consistently impressed with their ability to bridge legal and business issues,” said Mitchell. “I am looking forward to spending the next stage of my career at the firm.”
