Daily Report Honors Patricia Barmeyer and Chilton Varner With Lifetime Achievement Awards on its 125-year Anniversary

ATLANTA, July 6, 2015 — King & Spalding partners Patricia Thrower Barmeyer and Chilton Davis Varner were both honored with Lifetime Achievement awards, along with other prominent and respected lawyers and judges, by the Daily Report, Georgia’s oldest regional legal trade publication.

In celebration of its 125th year anniversary, the Daily Report selected 22 lifetime achievement award recipients and featured them in a special section entitled, “Profiles of Achievement.” The honorees, which included luminaries in litigation, government, business, transactions and the judiciary, were also honored at a dinner at the St. Regis in Buckhead on June 17. According to the publication, many of the recipients “took unpopular stands to do what they thought was right for their clients or law.”

Barmeyer, head of King & Spalding’s environmental practice, was recognized for her 17 years working on environmental and natural resource cases at the office of the Attorney General of the State of Georgia as well as her 25-year career in private practice representing companies in major environmental tort cases. The publication also highlighted Barmeyer’s civic work, which includes being a leader in the Ossabaw Island Foundation, the Piedmont Park Conservancy, and the Trust for Public Land and its offshoot, Parks for People, which acquires urban land to put green space within a 10-minute walk of every city resident.

Varner, who has 30 years of courtroom experience as a trial lawyer defending corporations in product liability, business torts, contract and other commercial disputes, was honored for being one of the country’s “top corporate defense litigators … having tried and won bellwether cases.” The publication also mentioned her current role as national coordinating co-counsel and lead trial counsel for Purdue Pharma in a massive product liability litigation over the drug company’s pain medication OxyContin. “In those cases, courts have denied plaintiffs class status 10 times and dismissed more than 400 suits,” the Daily Report noted.
