Julia Romano is a Partner in King & Spalding’s Litigation practice. She defends Fortune 100 and other large companies in a wide range of complex litigation matters, including medical device, pharmaceutical, automotive, toxic tort and other product liability and tort cases.
Julia has significant case management, deposition, motion and trial experience. She works closely with experts and other team members to evaluate cases, develop trial strategies and, ultimately, obtain favorable outcomes for her clients. In addition to managing a large docket of cases, Julia also serves as trial counsel.
In 2019, Julia served as trial counsel and obtained back-to-back defense verdicts for Johnson & Johnson in two cases claiming the company's talcum powder products caused the plaintiff's mesothelioma. In April 2019, Julia served as second-chair trial counsel for Johnson & Johnson in Blinkinsop v. Albertsons Companies, Inc., et al., JCCP 4674 / BC677764. After less than a day of deliberations, the jury returned a unanimous defense verdict in favor of Johnson & Johnson. Julia was named a “Legal Lion” by Law360 as a result of this victory. In October 2019, Julia served as second-chair trial counsel for Johnson & Johnson in a similar lawsuit, Crudge v. Amcord, Inc., et al., JCCP 4674 / BC685901. The jury returned a defense verdict in favor of Johnson & Johnson, finding the plaintiff had not been exposed to asbestos from Johnson's Baby Powder. This victory landed Julia another Law360 Legal Lion recognition.
Julia has helped obtain numerous other successes for her clients. In 2017, Julia was part of the trial team that won a complete jury defense verdict for Johnson & Johnson in the first case in the country to go to verdict where plaintiffs alleged Johnson's Baby Powder caused the plaintiff's mesothelioma. (Tina Herford, et al. v. AT&T Corp, et al., LASC Case No. JCCP 4674 / BC646315.) The Herford defense verdict was ranked No. 1 on CVN’s Top 10 Most Impressive Defense Verdicts of 2017 and named one of the Top Verdicts in California in 2017 by the Daily Journal.
Just one day after the Herford defense verdict, Julia argued and won summary judgment for Johnson & Johnson in what would have been the company’s next talc/mesothelioma case to go to trial. (Gibbons v. Axia Acquisition Corporation, et al., LASC Case No. JCCP 4674 / BC644854.) This judgment was recently affirmed by the California Court of Appeal in a published decision.
In 2014, Julia was part of the trial team that won a complete jury defense verdict for DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. in the first Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip implant multi-district litigation case in the United States District Court, Northern District of Texas. Two of Julia's other defense verdicts (one for Ford Motor Company and one for Marriott International, Inc.) were named Top Ten California Jury Verdicts by the Daily Journal in 2011 and 2012, respectively.
Julia earned her B.A. in Psychology and Communication from the University of Southern California (USC), where she was a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society and a participant in USC’s International Communication Studies Program. She earned her J.D. from Southwestern Law School, where she was an active member of the Moot Court Honors Program, Moot Court Board of Governors, and Student Bar Association.
