As a partner in the firm’s Government Advocacy and Public Policy practice, Alicia O'Brien represents companies, organizations and individuals in investigations and enforcement actions by Congress, state attorneys general, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and other federal agencies and inspectors general.

Alicia uses her extensive experience as a former senior official at DOJ, along with her successful private sector experience, to help clients in a wide variety of industries navigate these high-stakes matters. An astute strategist, she has focused throughout her career on counseling clients facing complex, sensitive matters, and routinely advises clients on the significant legal, business, political, and public relations risks unique in congressional and parallel government investigations.

Alicia has managed all stages of federal and state investigations, including multistate investigations. She has provided effective legal and crisis management counsel in wide-scale subpoena responses, witness preparation and high-profile testimony, and public messaging. She also has extensive experience in leading internal investigations and providing guidance on proactive and remedial compliance measures, as well as mitigation of reputational damage and business disruption.

Alicia previously held senior leadership positions at DOJ as an Associate Deputy Attorney General in the Office of the Deputy Attorney General, and as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legislative Affairs. In these capacities, she advised Department leadership on high-profile, sensitive matters, and managed the Department's responses to an exceptional volume of congressional oversight hearings and investigations, and parallel inquiries by inspectors general and other federal agencies.

In addition, Alicia regularly prepared DOJ's most senior officials for numerous congressional hearings, member briefings, and other congressional engagement on a wide variety of oversight and policy issues. Alicia also played a key role in managing the Senate confirmation process for presidentially appointed Department nominees.

Throughout the course of her government positions and extensive advocacy for her clients in private practice, Alicia has developed valuable relationships with officials and senior advisors on both sides of the aisle and engages regularly with federal and state public officials on oversight, policy and regulatory issues.

Prior to joining King & Spalding, Alicia was a partner in the Washington, DC office of a global AmLaw 100 firm.
