Leading International Arbitration Enforcement and Appellate Lawyer Matthew D. McGill Joins King & Spalding in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 28, 2025 - King & Spalding announced today that Matthew D. McGill has joined the firm’s International Disputes practice group as a partner. McGill is based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

McGill’s diverse litigation practice combines international arbitration enforcement, appellate litigation, commercial litigation and sports gaming industry experience. His enforcement practice includes enforcing judgments against foreign sovereigns, both in the enforcement of arbitral awards and judgments and in collection of sovereign debt. He also has significant appellate experience, including arguing five cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and has achieved multiple high-profile victories over foreign sovereigns and several groundbreaking decisions at the intersection of sports and gaming.

“Matt has a very sophisticated enforcement practice against foreign sovereigns, both in the enforcement of arbitral awards and judgments and in collection of sovereign debt – an active area in the global disputes world, and one that adds a strong complement to our widely recognized international arbitration practice,” said Elizabeth Silbert, co-leader of the firm’s International Disputes practice group. “Matt’s entrepreneurial mindset and versatility as a litigator, with his strong market reputation as a leading arbitration enforcement attorney as well as his strong appellate practice, provide us great opportunities to build on our client offerings across our disputes practices.”

McGill joins King & Spalding from Gibson Dunn, where he was a partner and co-chair of the firm’s Judgment and Arbitral Award Enforcement and Betting and Gaming practice groups. He received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Dartmouth College and his J.D. from Stanford Law School, Order of the Coif. Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, McGill clerked for Chief Justice John Roberts during his service on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He also clerked for Judge Joseph McLaughlin on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and served at the United States Department of Justice as a Bristow Fellow in the Office of the Solicitor General.

“I’m thrilled to be part of King & Spalding’s world-leading International Disputes team and to practice at a firm where collaboration, teamwork and practice integration are foundational,” said McGill. “The platform here will allow me to scale my enforcement practice while continuing to represent clients in high-stakes appellate matters, all while contributing to the firm’s overall growth.”
