SEC Chairman Announces Commencement of Appointment Process for Five PCAOB Board Positions
July 25, 2025

On July 23, 2025, SEC Chair Paul S. Atkins issued a formal call for candidates to fill all five Board positions of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, including the Chairperson.

Chair Atkins invited applications from individuals with “integrity and reputation” who are committed to investor protection and have demonstrated expertise in financial disclosures and auditing matters. Any nominee selected will serve for the remainder of the five-year term associated with his/her seat, before being considered for reappointment for a second, full term, if eligible. Additionally, a CPA may only serve as the Board’s Chairperson provided they have not been a practicing CPA for five years preceding appointment as Chairperson.

Chair Atkins also emphasized that, although the PCAOB’s mission has not materially changed, its budget and compensation have increased “at a rate significantly faster than that of the Commission.” As such, he indicated that “an evaluation of Board members’ compensation will be among the items the Commission considers in connection with its review of the Board’s 2026 budget.”
