Bio

José Mario Valdés represents clients in complex commercial disputes involving domestic and international infrastructure projects in both U.S. state and federal courts, as well as in domestic and international arbitration proceedings. His practice focuses on disputes involving agreements relevant to the financing, development, design, construction, and operation of large infrastructure projects. His experience on construction disputes spans the main construction delivery models, including Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), Design-Bid-Build (DBB), Desing-Build (BD), Construction Management at Risk (CMAR), and Public-Private Partnerships (P3). He has worked on disputes over Power Purchase Agreements, Supply Agreements, LLC Agreements, Credit Agreements, among others. He has advised on a broad spectrum of projects, from energy projects of both traditional and renewable energy sources to large industrial facilities like data centers and advanced manufacturing facilities for high-tech products like electric vehicles.

Beyond his experience in construction disputes, José Mario has broad experience in commercial disputes. He has prosecuted and defended against frequent commercial claims, including breach of contract, fraud, and other business torts. He is also proficient in theories of derivative liability such as alter ego, de facto merger, veil piercing, and agency.

Before joining King & Spalding, José Mario was an associate in the Complex Litigation and International Arbitration practice groups at a leading global law firm. He also served as a law clerk in the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. Earlier in his career, he was an associate in the litigation department of an AmLaw 50 firm, where he handled commercial disputes and regulatory matters before the SEC and DOJ involving bribery of public officials. In addition, he completed an externship at a global reinsurer, providing him with valuable industry perspective in his practice.
