China Promotes Artificial Intelligence Industry

To accelerate the development of the artificial intelligence industry and promote a deep integration of artificial intelligence and real economy, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (“MIIT”) issued a Three-year Action Plan for Promoting the Development of the New-generation Artificial Intelligence Industry (2018 – 2020) (Gong Xin Bu Ke (2017) No. 315). The Plan aims to have an internationally competitive artificial intelligence (“AI”) industry by 2020. The Plan gives priority to the development of smart and connected vehicles, smart service robots, smart drone (UAV), medical imaging diagnosis assistance systems, video image identification systems, smart voice interaction systems, smart translation systems, smart home products, smart sensors, neural network chips, and open source platforms. The Plan further calls for a deep development of smart manufacturing. As supporting measures, the Plan calls on both the central government and local governments to increase government funding for the AI industry. The Plan also supports AI enterprises to strengthen cooperation with financial institutions.
