Marcio Vasconcellos

• Representing a Lima Expresa (VINCI owned) in a dispute against the City of Lima in an international arbitration regarding the nullity of the Concession Contract. The company is also filing several complex construction claims.
• Representing a U.S. mining company in a treaty arbitration against Mexico.
• Representing one of the “big four” accounting firms in efforts to re-design their dispute resolution mechanisms throughout Latin America.
• Represented a Spanish engineering and construction group in a multi-party ICC arbitration arising out of a renewable energy project in the state of Oregon valued at $660 million.
• Represented the owner/builder of a solar power project in multiple ICC arbitrations arising out of a $1 billion solar power megaproject in California.
• Represented a California cotton grower in a $300 million multi-party ICDR arbitration seated in Toronto, Canada and arising out of allegations of Sherman Act antitrust conspiracy relating to the sale of cotton in India.
• Represented a California individual in $70 million post-merger ICDR arbitration filed by the Japanese buyer and post-merger surviving entity.
• Represented a products and services provider from Angola in a $80 million ICC arbitration filed by a California oil refinery for services provided pursuant to the oil refinery’s operation in a harbor in Angola. Following initial rounds of briefing and the successful establishment of the arbitral tribunal’s jurisdiction on disputed issued, the case settled in favorable terms for our clients.
• Represented a California manufacturer in a AAA arbitration filed by a Nevada contractor in a public works water project.
• Second chair delivering opening arguments in a CAM/CCBC arbitration filed by the heirs of a group of deceased doctors against a large physician group corporation in São Paulo.
• Represented a Brazilian distributor in a CAM/CCBC arbitration filed against a wine manufacturer and a wine reseller from Argentina.

Marcio Vasconcellos is a senior associate in King & Spalding’s New York office and a member of the International Arbitration Practice Group.  Mr. Vasconcellos focuses on commercial and investor-state arbitration. 

Mr. Vasconcellos represents clients in commercial and investor-state arbitration.  Marcio has a particular focus on disputes following mergers and acquisitions, mining, energy, and financial sectors, as well as broad experience in matters involving Latin America and Brazil.  He has represented clients under most institutional rules and across a broad spectrum of industries, including oil and gas, electric power, mining, transportation, real estate development, manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals.

Marcio was formerly an Adjunct Professor of Law at Pepperdine University School of Law, where he taught International Commercial Arbitration – Theory & Doctrine.  He was also a Lecturer in Law at USC-Gould – University of Southern California School of Law, where he taught advanced oral advocacy.  Marcio was also the Chair for the Los Angeles Chapter of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators – North America Branch.

Mr. Vasconcellos received an LL.M. in international arbitration from Pepperdine University (2016), where he was a research assistant to Professors Thomas Stipanowich and Jack J. Coe Jr., and coach of Pepperdine’s Vis Moot team.  In connection with those studies, he was a recipient of a full-tuition scholarship from JAMS.  Marcio holds an LL.B. (2010) as well as a master’s degree in international commercial contracts (2014) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Prior to joining King & Spalding in 2021, Marcio practiced from 2010 to 2015 in Brazil, where he was an associate with a global firm and a junior partner with a commercial law boutique in Porto Alegre and Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Between 2017 and 2020 Marcio as an associate with a leading, full-service California firm, practicing in international and domestic arbitration and related litigation.

Mr. Vasconcellos is admitted to practice in California, Illinois, and Brazil.  He is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish.
