Joseph D Eng, Jr.

Joseph Eng Jr. is a first-chair trial attorney who leads high-stakes intellectual property disputes for clients across the chemical, life sciences, technology, and advanced manufacturing sectors. He has represented clients in patent infringement actions in federal district courts throughout the United States and before the International Trade Commission in matters involving microelectronic devices, semiconductor processing, anti-corrosion coatings, optical fibers, medical devices, respiratory protective devices, and pharmaceuticals.

Joe develops case theories for complex patent litigation matters and has coordinated international patent enforcement campaigns. As a trial lawyer with deep scientific training, he works closely with client teams, technical witnesses, and experts to translate complex technology into persuasive litigation themes. He was a member of the team that earned a Litigation Team of the Week accolade from Law.com for securing a complete defense verdict for a pharmaceutical company client sued for a $2.3 billion unjust enrichment claim arising from a patent dispute.

Joe holds a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Columbia University and B.S. degrees in chemistry and physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Before entering the legal profession, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Exxon’s Corporate Research Center and at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, and later served as a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, where he developed a research program in semiconductor surface characterization.

In addition to his courtroom work, Joe advises clients on patent procurement, risk assessment, freedom-to-operate, non-infringement, patent validity, licensing, and technology transactions.

Joe is an author or co-author of 30 technical papers, including two invited reviews, and has delivered more than 25 technical presentations in the United States and abroad, including five invited lectures. He has also lectured internationally on patent enforcement, licensing, and U.S. patent law, and received the Fordham University Legal Writing Award for excellence in legal writing.

Joe has served as a board member and president of the New Jersey Intellectual Property Law Association (NJIPLA).

Joe has served as a board member and president of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) and has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Asians in New York by City & State Magazine.
