Energy Industry
Charles has represented energy companies throughout his career. His oil and gas clients include major oil companies, independent exploration and production companies, drilling contractors, and service providers. He has handled upstream, midstream, and downstream disputes involving royalty class and mass actions, take-or-pay obligations, rights of first refusal, international tax issues, successor liability, refinery supply contracts, refinery fires, alleged groundwater contamination, and antitrust claims. Across these matters, Charles brings industry knowledge and the ability to translate complex technical and commercial issues into clear, persuasive advocacy.
Charles also represents solar companies and understands the distinctive business and market pressures facing companies “on the solar coaster.” His solar matters have included major claims under international supply contracts, project finance disputes, and other business-critical commercial disputes.
In addition to litigation, Charles advises energy clients on strategic issues involving LNG projects, carbon capture and storage projects, oil and gas royalties, and winding down producing fields.
Technology Industry
Charles represents technology companies in licensing, intellectual property, and business disputes. He has represented licensors in claims against licensees and infringers involving breach of licensing agreements, copyright infringement, and patent infringement. He also handles service, supply, and other commercial disputes for technology clients, including well-known technology companies and early-stage private equity portfolio companies.
Environmental Disputes
Charles represents clients in significant environmental matters, including as longstanding national counsel for a Fortune 50 company in alleged groundwater contamination cases brought by state attorneys general, water providers, and municipalities asserting tort and statutory claims. He has also represented companies in disputes involving releases from terminals and refineries, alleged air pollution and community impacts arising from a major refinery fire, successor environmental liabilities, and investment disputes involving brownfield projects.
Military Service
After graduation from West Point, Charles served in the 2nd United States Armored Cavalry Regiment in Germany and during Desert Storm as a tank platoon leader, scout platoon leader, and supply officer. Charles has remained committed to the military and West Point communities, including through nine years of service as a director of the West Point Association of Graduates during a period that included a major fundraising campaign and significant capital projects. He is also active in the 2nd United States Cavalry Association.
