On February 2, 2023, the PCAOB staff released a “spotlight” report, titled Additional Insights on the Remediation Process, which addresses the remediation of audit firms’ quality control deficiencies identified in PCAOB inspections. The report supplements the Board’s 2006 release (No. 104-2006-077) and the inspections staff’s 2013 guidance concerning the remediation process by providing “additional insights” gleaned from evaluating remediation efforts. The spotlight discusses the factors that the staff considers when developing remediation recommendations to the Board and when evaluating remediation efforts, including, for example, heightened expectations for addressing repeat or persistent quality control deficiencies, the importance of root cause analysis, considerations about subsequent inspection results, and expectations on the timing of remediation design and implementation.
