With expertise in assisting clients of all sizes, including multinational corporations to startup companies, King & Spalding’s intellectual property prosecution, counseling and due diligence practices focus on creating value in our clients’ patent portfolios. These practices encompass a wide range of technologies and subject matter, including life sciences, computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering, oil and gas, and financial services.
Our team has obtained and assisted in the procurement and management of hundreds of U.S. and foreign patents, with particular expertise in managing complex patent portfolios, registering and maintaining hundreds of trademarks, copyrights and domain names, and providing guidance on Internet and social media policies. We also routinely negotiate technology transactions and license agreements, conduct due diligence concerning intellectual property assets in mergers and acquisitions, and provide opinions on intellectual property matters.
The majority of our team’s lawyers, agents and advisors hold technical degrees, including PhDs, and are proficient in numerous technical areas including aerospace engineering, biochemistry, chemical engineering, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering, molecular biology, nuclear engineering, pharmacology and telecommunications. Members also have worked as in-house counsel, examiners in the USPTO, and industry engineers and scientists.
Our IP counselors also guide companies through post-grant procedures, such as strengthening a patent prior to assertion in litigation, re-examinations, inter-partes reviews, and post-grant review proceedings, including filing, strategizing and evaluating likely outcomes of IPRs related to patents involved in various diligence matters.
