Merrick White specialises in global oil, gas, LNG, refining and petrochemical project development. As a partner in our Projects and Construction practice, Merrick advises clients on all aspects of energy-related development projects and transactions, from the granting of upstream concession agreements to the acquisition and disposal of energy assets; the development of refineries, petrochemical projects, gas and oil production and transportation infrastructure; and the sale of oil, gas, LNG and petrochemical products.

With more than nearly three decades of experience, Merrick works with clients on the legal, commercial, business development and engineering aspects of the oil and gas industry, particularly in Asia and Africa. Among other matters, he advises clients on farm-out arrangements, gas pipeline network developments, and all forms of gas and LNG sale and purchase agreements and project development. His recent work includes acting on behalf of the lenders in the financing of a major Central and South Asia gas pipeline project.

In addition to his legal qualifications, Merrick is a Chartered Chemical Engineer. He has spent over 23 years in Asia (including seven years in Jakarta) successfully developing major infrastructure projects, and six years in engineering and commercial roles with British Gas Exploration and Production.

Since 2012, Merrick has been recommended as a Leading Lawyer in Chambers Global for Project work, and from 2008 for Oil and Gas, where he is ranked Band 1. He was also recognized by Chambers Global in 2019, as well as by Chambers Asia-Pacific in 2019, for his work across the oil and gas industry.

Advising Ophir Energy on the gas sales from Bangkanai PSC to PLN in Indonesia

Advising Conrad Petroleum on the negotiation of its gas sales agreement in Indonesia

Advising on the ongoing US$10bn Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan to India gas pipeline project including, advising on the Technical Service Contract, to be offered to potential upstream gas field investors; the Host Government Agreements with each transit country; the Inter-governmental agreements covering the gas sale and project development; the structuring of the pipeline company holding companies to achieve Bi-lateral treaty protection tax efficiency and finance-ability;  the shareholders’ agreement and investment agreement for the pipeline company; negotiating the 35 TCF gas sales agreement between Turkmengas and the three national gas buyers; preparing the gas transportation agreement, pipeline multi-user network code and other pipeline operational agreements; advising on the FEED strategy and bid documents and advising on the financing plan. Our advice to the project included working closely with project advisors including the ADB (financing), Penspen (pipeline technical adviser), Taylor De-Jongh (financial modelling) and PWC (tax advisory) to provide legal and commercial advice that integrated with the technical, financial and tax plans
