Joe Englert is a senior associate in King & Spalding’s Atlanta office and is a member of the firm’s Contracts and Business Torts Practice. His practice focuses on representing policyholders in complex commercial insurance coverage disputes. Joe’s representation of insurance policyholders includes all aspects of insurance coverage disputes, including complex litigation relating to property damage, bad faith claims, directors and officers liability (D&O), professional liability / errors and omissions (E&O), cyber /privacy liability, and advertising injury, as well as advising clients in obtaining best in class terms and conditions with U.S. and international insurers for commercial property, D&O, E&O, cyber, political risk and other lines of insurance coverage. Joe’s representative clients in various industries, including financial institutions, energy and infrastructure companies, restaurants and hospitality companies, and manufacturing companies.  Joe also represents insurance brokers against professional negligence claims involving complex coverage issues.  Last year alone, Joe helped his clients recover more than $500 million from insurance companies.     

Recently, Joe has been on the forefront of fight on behalf policyholders to recover for business interruption losses arising out of the COVID-19 outbreak, and is representing clients in both federal and state court in breach of contract and bad faith actions against insurance companies that denied coverage for COVID-19 claims.  

In addition to representing clients in litigation and arbitration matters, Joe routinely advises companies on risk management needs arising out of insurance policy renewals and mergers and acquisitions.  

Joe is a frequent author and speaker on topics relating to insurance and crisis management and other commercial litigation issues. He has been named as a Georgia Rising Star by Super Lawyers from 2018-2020.  

Before joining King & Spalding, Joe was an associate with DLA Piper LLP, where he represented Fortune 500 companies and large franchisors in various commercial transactional, regulatory and litigation matters, and a litigation associate at Wargo & French LLP, where he represented financial institutions, manufacturers and technology companies in complex commercial disputes and policyholder insurance coverage disputes.

Joe earned his law degree from the University San Diego School of Law, where he graduated with honors and was elected to the Order of the Coif. In law school, he won an award for outstanding oral advocacy and served as a staff member on the San Diego Law Review and executive editor of the Journal for Climate and Energy Law. He received his B.A. in Journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

Joe is a lecturer at the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Public Policy. He was selected to the 2015 class of Leadership North Fulton and also serves on an advisory board for the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce.
