John's practice is focused on commercial real estate finance, where he represents financial institutions and real estate funds in connection with single-lender and agented, multi-lender transactions. John has vast experience coordinating the closing of newly originated commercial mortgage loans, the acquisition of existing commercial mortgage loans, negotiating loan documentation, drafting term sheets and managing relationships with external legal counsel. Additionally, Mr. Vavas is skilled at representing various lenders in the origination of CMBS, portfolio, construction, mezzanine and syndicated loans secured by real estate, as well as managing the liquidation of legacy commercial real estate assets.

Prior to joining King & Spalding, John was the Head of Legal and Chief Compliance Officer for Allegiant Real Estate Capital, a commercial real estate lender in Manhattan. He held a similar role at FirstKey Lending prior to the relaunching of FirstKey's CRE business as an independent investment company under the Allegiant banner. Prior to joining FirstKey, John was an Associate Director at Macquarie Investments US, Vice President and Counsel at Nomura, and a practicing Associate at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal as well as Thacher Proffitt & Wood.
