Dr. Sebastian D. Müller is a Frankfurt-based dispute resolution lawyer at King & Spalding. He is a member of the Trial & Global Disputes practice and part of the firm’s international data, privacy & security initiative. His practice focuses on three areas: (i) commercial and investment arbitration proceedings; (ii) commercial and financial litigation proceedings; and (iii) compliance and data protection advice. He represents clients both in arbitration proceedings and state courts.

  • Arbitration: Dr. Müller represents clients in domestic and international arbitration proceedings (in particular under the DIS, ICC, ICSID, SCC and Swiss Rules and in ad hoc proceedings), enforcement actions as well as in alternative dispute resolution proceedings. He gained particular experience in post M&A, construction and financial matters as well as long-term contract adaptation, commercial agency and joint venture disputes.
  • Litigation: Müller regularly represents clients before German courts of first and second instance. He has substantive experience in banking and financial litigation matters, including defense work for banks and funds against claims by institutional investors. He advises on international litigation issues and assists clients in legal aid proceedings, such as the taking of depositions before German courts.
  • Data, privacy & security: Müller advises clients on German and European data privacy issues in the context of international arbitration or investigation proceedings and counsels on German and European data protection, cross-border data transfers, cybersecurity, risk management issues and incident responses. He assists clients in getting their European operations compliant to the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

From 2015 until 2018, Dr. Müller co-chaired the under-40 group of the German Institution of Arbitration (DIS) for the Frankfurt region. He is one of the co-organizers of the annual DIS40 Arbitration Alpen Think Tank. He also participated in the Young ICCA Mentoring Programme. Dr. Müller regularly publishes on dispute-related topics and speaks at conferences. He studied in Heidelberg (Germany) and Leuven (Belgium). During his legal training, he worked with law firms focusing on arbitration in London, Frankfurt and Zurich. In 2011, he obtained a doctorate-in-law from the University of Heidelberg (Dr. jur.). He speaks German and English and has basic level Dutch and French language skills.
