In response to the growing debate on the role of businesses in respecting human rights, the New York City Bar Association has formed a Working Group on Business and Human Rights to define policies and programs in this increasingly important area and appointed New York International Arbitration partner Viren Mascarenhas to co-chair the Working Group in September 2019. In June 2020, based on the recommendation of the Working Group, the New York City Bar adopted a pioneer policy statement on Business and Human Rights proposed by the Working Group in collaboration with the Bar’s standing committees. The policy statement can be found here.
Viren will continue to co-chair Phase 2 of the Working Group, which will analyze whether to recommend that the New York City Bar Association should become a signatory to the UN Global Compact and New York City should become a signatory to the UN Global Compact Cities Programme. The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative seeking to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. Phase 2 will also assess the link between businesses and the right to a healthy environment.
