LONDON, Feb. 27, 2020 — UK legal publication The Lawyer has selected a King & Spalding dispute for its Top 20 Cases of 2020 list, which identifies the “cases to watch” for the year.
King & Spalding is representing several oil and gas investors who are seeking to enforce a US$540 million arbitral award against the Republic of Kazakhstan. The matter is the National Bank of Kazakhstan and Republic of Kazakhstan v The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV London Branch, Anatolie Stati, Gabriel Stati, Ascom Group SA & Terra Raf Trans Traiding.
According to The Lawyer, the complex dispute, which is scheduled to be heard in the UK High Court in March, is “a truly global case” that pertains to “a mammoth fund of up to US$22.6 billion.” Various proceedings relating to the enforcement of the arbitral award are pending in seven different jurisdictions including the UK, the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy.
