Texas Lawyer Honors Doak Bishop with Lifetime Achievement Award

HOUSTON, July 3, 2019 — Texas Lawyer magazine has named King & Spalding Houston partner Doak Bishop a 2019 Lifetime Achievement award winner.

The Lifetime Achievement award is part of Texas Lawyer’s Professional Excellence awards program and recognizes individuals “who have left a lasting imprint on the Texas legal community,” according to the publication.

Bishop has built an international arbitration practice at King & Spalding widely considered one of the leading practices in the world. Since he launched it in Houston, the team has grown to include more than 100 lawyers in the firm’s offices worldwide. Bishop has become a leading authority on bilateral investment treaty arbitrations worldwide and has achieved many of its major milestones and wins. Most notably, he represented Chevron in its dispute with Ecuador over a $9.5 billion environmental judgment, in which the tribunal held Ecuador responsible for breaching its bilateral investment treaty with the U.S. and ordered it to render the judgment unenforceable. This was the largest and most complex denial of justice case in history.

Over the lifetime of his career, Bishop has also dedicated his time and efforts to the general advancement of the field of international arbitration. He has served as Chairman of the Institute of Transnational Arbitration, as a Director of the American Arbitration Association, on the Courts of the SIAC and LCIA, and he sits on the Governing Board of the International Congress for Commercial Arbitration.

The Texas Lawyer will publish profiles of each winner in the September issue of the magazine, and an awards ceremony will take place Sept. 18 in Dallas.
