Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Honors King & Spalding with Award for Pro Bono Work

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 25, 2018 — The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area is honoring King & Spalding with the Jack W. Londen Award in recognition of its “exemplary impact work that protects and advances the civil rights of marginalized communities,” according to the organization.

The Lawyers’ Committee is also giving special recognition to partners Paul R. Johnson and Joshua Toll and associates Bailey Langner and Garner Kropp for their pro bono efforts. Many other King & Spalding lawyers have worked on pro bono matters with the Lawyers’ Committee as well.

In recent years, King & Spalding has worked with the Lawyers’ Committee on a range of litigation, to protect immigrants’ rights, to support minority-owned businesses, and to support the academic success of students of color. For example:

  • King & Spalding served as lead counsel in a successful Freedom of Information Act case brought by the Lawyers’ Committee, Dolores Street Community Services, the National Immigration Law Center, Legal Aid at Work, and the National Employment Law Project to obtain information about federal agency policies and procedures on workplace immigration raids.
  • The firm assisted a student of color to challenge improper discipline practices by her school district, and helped her transfer to an appropriate school so that she could advance to the next academic grade with her peers.
  • The firm is currently working with the Lawyers’ Committee to investigate and challenge law enforcement over-policing of people of color near their homes.

The Lawyers’ Committee will present King & Spalding with the award at a gala in San Francisco on Friday. Working with nonprofit organizations, King & Spalding provides legal representation free of charge for many who cannot otherwise afford counsel on a range of complex and social justice and equality cases and on cases addressing fundamental legal rights. The large majority of our U.S.-based lawyers and many of our internationally-based lawyers participate in the firm’s pro bono program.
