LONDON, March 29th, 2019 – King & Spalding was crowned International Arbitration Team of the Year at the Legal Business Awards 2019, which were held in London last night.
The firm picked up the award for its work representing oil giant Reliance Industries Limited (India) in a US$1.7bn UNCITRAL case relating to a production sharing contract with the Indian Government, which Legal Business said was “of great significance to the oil and gas industry”. The case was the first major international arbitration to be governed by India’s Arbitration and Conciliation Act as amended in 2015 and one of the largest Indian arbitrations ever.
London partners Tom Sprange QC and Sajid Ahmed collected the award, alongside Atul Dayal from AS Dayal & Associates, which was Indian co-counsel on the case.
King & Spalding was also shortlisted for the Corporate Team of the Year award for advising Life Company Consolidation Group (now Utmost Group) on its landmark £1.8bn acquisition of Equitable Life, the world’s oldest mutual insurer.
