CHICAGO, June 26, 2019 — The U.S. Army has honored King & Spalding associate Benton Merkel with its General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award. Merkel was one of only 30 officers recognized from a pool of more than 100,000 eligible company grade officers from the Active Army, Army Reserves and National Guard.
The General Douglas MacArthur Award promotes effective junior officer leadership in the U.S. Army by recognizing company grade commissioned officers and warrant officers who “demonstrate the ideals for which General MacArthur stood—Duty. Honor. Country,” according to the Army’s announcement of the award. Merkel received the award from Lieutenant General Walter E. Piatt, the director of the Army staff, at a ceremony at the Pentagon on June 21.
Merkel previously served as a field artillery officer in the 82nd Airborne Division, deploying to Afghanistan from 2007 to 2008, and continues to serve as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves as a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps. Merkel will be promoted to the rank of major later this year.
Merkel is an associate in King & Spalding’s Corporate, Finance and Investments group in Chicago, where he focuses his practice on commercial finance deals, including corporate lending transactions, leveraged acquisitions, specialty financings and other debt investments.
