NEW YORK, May 31, 2019 — King & Spalding partner Katie McCarthy was elected president of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA) at their annual meeting on May 14.
As a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property practice, Katie specializes in trademark, copyright, design and advertising law. She represents clients in a wide array of industries including consumer products, pharmaceuticals, sports and entertainment, cosmetics, and food and beverages. Katie appears on behalf of clients in federal court and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Katie also develops domestic and international protection and enforcement programs.
Katie served on the Board of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association since 2015. Katie also served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Trademark Association’s scholarly journal, The Trademark Reporter from 2016 to 2017 and edits PLI’s Kane on Trademark Law treatise. Katie has presented at and co-chaired PLI’s IP Enforcement Update program annually since 2011 and frequently writes and speaks for NYIPLA, PLI, INTA and other organizations on trademark, copyright and false advertising topics.
The NYIPLA serves as a vehicle to promote the development and administration of intellectual property interests, striving to educate the public and members of the bar and continually working with foreign associations to harmonize the substance and interpretation of international conventions for the protection of intellectual property. The NYIPLA is one of the largest regional IP bar associations in the United States, with more than 1,000 attorney members who practice in the areas of patent, copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. One of the notable highlights of each Association year is the Annual Dinner in Honor of the Federal Judiciary (the Judges Dinner), held in March. Katie will preside over the organization’s 98th Annual dinner in March 2020.
