John Shakow Receives IIR MDRP Lifetime Achievement Award

WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 5, 2016 — The Institute for International Research has given King & Spalding partner John Shakow a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to the pharmaceutical government price reporting industry.

Shakow, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is a member of the firm’s FDA & Life Sciences practice, was given the award at the latest Medicaid Drug Rebate Program Summit, held Sept. 20-22 in Chicago, Ill. The event, which is now in its 21st year, is considered one of the most important events on government healthcare pricing, rebates and regulation.  To date, IIR has only awarded this honor to six others, including the former head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) who oversaw the implementation of the MDRP in 1990.

Noted life sciences compliance consultant Miree Lee presented the award to Shakow, and said of him: “For years, this person has been a trusted advisor who has demonstrated an uncanny ability to understand and dissect the complicated nature and nuances of pricing statutes and regulations and guidance. … [His] skilled business acumen helps us understand the implications of policies and regulations, and also the direct and indirect impact to our businesses. He demonstrates the unique ability to take policy to practice. The Lifetime Achievement Award winner is truly an ambassador for the industry, not afraid to take positions and to advocate on our behalf.”

Mr. Shakow’s practice focuses on complex regulatory, commercial and litigation issues related to all aspects of pharmaceutical government price reporting, including day-to-day counseling, strategic planning, merger integration, internal investigations, civil litigation and defense in government investigations. He counsels many pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturers with regard to their rights and obligations under the Medicaid, Medicare, Federal Supply Schedule, 340B and related programs. He regularly assists clients in interactions with CMS, HRSA, HHS OIG and the VA.
