LOS ANGELES, March 15, 2018 — The Daily Journal (Calif.) has named a King & Spalding matter among the top verdicts in California. The publication’s annual list highlights “the largest and most significant verdicts and appellate reversals” in the state in 2017, and profiled a defense verdict King & Spalding obtained on behalf of Johnson & Johnson.
In the matter, Herford v. Johnson & Johnson, et al., the plaintiff alleged she developed mesothelioma as a result of using Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower body powder which she claimed was contaminated with asbestos. On Nov. 16, 2017, King & Spalding obtained a complete jury defense verdict in the case, which was the first of its kind to be tried, and is considered a bellwether for similar cases across the country. The jury found that J&J and its talc supplier, Imerys Talc America, had not acted negligently and their products contained no manufacturing, design or warning defects.
Earlier this year, the Courtroom View Network named the Herford verdict the No. 1 Most Impressive Defense Verdict of 2017.
The Los Angeles-based King & Spalding team on this matter was led by partner Alex Calfo and counsel Julia Romano and included counsel Susan Vargas, associate Amy Zumsteg, senior associate Jennifer Stewart, associate Stacy Foster and staff attorney Nicole Fukuoka.
