Johnson & Johnson Agrees to Supply African Vaccine Acquisition Trust with 220 Million COVID-19 Vaccine Doses

On Monday, Johnson & Johnson announced that it had entered into an agreement with the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) to provide up to 220 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to the 55 member states in the African Union (AU). Aspen Pharmacare, a Johnson & Johnson partner, will play a key role in distributing COVID-19 vaccines to the AU member states. Furthermore, AVAT has the option to secure an additional 180 million COVID-19 vaccine doses under the agreement, for a total of 400 million doses through 2022.

Johnson & Johnson revealed that delivery of the vaccine doses will begin in the third quarter of 2021, but “the availability of the vaccine candidate is subject to its successful approval or authorization by the national regulatory authorities of AU member states.”
