On October 10, 2017, the National Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Finance of China published a statistical report on China’s expenditures in science and technology for the calendar year of 2016. According to the report, the Chinese government spent RMB 776.07 billion in total in the science and technology field in 2016, a growth of RMB 75.49 billion or 10.8% over the previous year. Of that, the central government expenditure reached RMB 326.93 billion, with a year-to-year growth of 8.5%, and the local government expenditure totaled RMB 449.14 billion, with a year-to-year growth of 12.5%. The nationwide expenditure in R&D reached RMB 1,567.67 billion in 2016, a growth of RMB 150.69 billion or 10.6% over the previous year. 77.5% or RMB 1,214.40 billion of that R&D expenditure was from companies, 14.4% or RMB 226.02 billion was from government-owned research institutes, and 6.8% or RMB 107.22 billion was from high education institutes.
