On March 19, 2021, the CDC published a report analyzing COVID-19 infection rates amongst fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated, and non-vaccinated residents of long-term care facilities experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak. Residents of long-term care facilities, particularly those at skilled nursing facilities, have experienced disproportionately high levels of COVID-19 associated morbidity and mortality. Additionally, analysis of vaccination efficacy amongst this group is critical as this group was not fully represented in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials.
A retrospective cohort analysis of two skilled nursing facilities experiencing an outbreak demonstrated that even partial vaccination with the Pizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was associated with a significant reduction in the risk for SARS-CoV-2. Partial vaccination is estimated to be 63% effective in preventing new infections among the observed skilled nursing facility residents.
