LNG

King & Spalding is recognized as one of the most active law firms in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) field. According to Chambers Global: The World's Leading Energy and Natural Resources Lawyers 2007, "It is this breadth that clients value and that makes it probably the premier firm for broad-based LNG support in the USA." Chambers has noted that the "firm has evolved…to occupy a dominant position in the LNG field."

King & Spalding covers the entire LNG value chain, from upstream and marketing through shipping and regasification, including state and federal regulation, development, commercial contracting, financing and construction.

Since 2000, King & Spalding has handled LNG matters involving over 31 countries (including Angola, Australia, the Bahamas, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Spain, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, the U.A.E., the U.K., the U.S. (and Puerto Rico) and Yemen).

The firm's lawyers represent many of the new onshore and offshore LNG terminals in North America; for example, King & Spalding was successful in obtaining FERC and other regulatory approvals for Cheniere, Freeport, Gulf LNG and Calhoun LNG. King & Spalding originated the form of LNG "Terminal Use Agreement" that is now the basis for commercialization of terminals, and has served as lead counsel in the negotiation of more than 13 long-term terminal capacity agreements.

King & Spalding's experience includes "cutting-edge" LNG matters such as:

  • EPC contracts for the Elba, Gulf LNG, Freeport and Cheniere terminals
  • Time charters for the Energy Bridge LNG fleet, the world's first onboard regasification vessels
  • Long-term ex-ship and FOB LNG sales to Asian buyers of 8+ million tons per annum
