Jawad I. Ali is Managing Partner of the firm’s Middle East offices, global head of the firm’s award-winning Islamic Finance practice group and is based in the firm’s Dubai office.  His practice covers a broad range of cross-border corporate, finance and investment matters.

Mr. Ali has substantial experience advising clients on a wide range of complex cross-border transactions and investments.  He regularly advises Middle Eastern clients on both conventional and Shari’ah-compliant M&A, private equity and real estate investments in the USA, Europe, the Middle East, India, South East Asia and Africa.

Mr. Ali is a pioneer in the development and implementation of Shari’ah-compliant financing and investment structures, including lease finance (Ijara), acquisition finance (Ijara wa-iqtinah), construction finance (Istisna’a - Ijara), trade finance (Murabaha), joint ventures (Musharaka) and Islamic bonds (Sukuk).  He has advised Islamic banks and other financial institutions and sponsors in the structuring and implementation of US, European, MENA and global Shari’ah-compliant real estate, private equity and asset leasing funds.   

Mr. Ali is a frequent speaker on the topic of Islamic finance and investment throughout the Middle East, Europe, the United States and Africa.  He is regularly ranked as a leading lawyer in independent legal directories and client-based surveys, and is praised by clients for being solution-oriented, pragmatic, flexible and very skilled in negotiations (Chambers Global and Legal 500).  Most recently, Legal 500 UK 2013 ranked Mr. Ali as a leading lawyer for Islamic Finance and Investments, areas where King & Spalding continues to be rated a Tier 1 firm and for which the firm received a special commendation.  Mr. Ali has been recognized among the “Best of the Best” in Euromoney’s biennial list of the top legal practitioners in the world.  Most recently, Legal 500 EMEA Middle East 2016 ranks Mr. Ali as a leading Islamic Finance lawyer who is highly recommended for Saudi and UAE banking and finance matters.  Chambers Global 2016 describes Mr. Ali as a “sectoral expert generally in Islamic finance” and has previously stated, “Jawad Ali leads the team in the UAE.  He is a favorite of clients, who say that ‘he does everything, and is very commercial and always on call.”
