Floyd Newton joined King & Spalding in 1980 and has been involved in many corporate and municipal finance transactions as borrower’s counsel, bond counsel, underwriter’s counsel and special tax counsel.  He was elected partner in 1987.

Mr. Newton has extensive experience in the financing by state and local entities on various infrastructure projects.  He has a particular focus on the financing of healthcare projects, higher education projects, and other projects for non-profit institutions.  He also has extensive experience  in the financing by utility companies, forest products companies and other companies of pollution control and sewage and solid waste disposal facilities and airport facilities..  Mr. Newton has also served as special tax counsel on a variety of transactions, including current and advance refunding of tax-exempt bonds and has represented a number of issuers, underwriters and conduit borrowers in connection with examinations of tax exempt bonds by the Internal Revenue Service, the SEC and other regulatory authorities.

Mr. Newton is a member of the American Bar Association and the National Association of Bond Lawyers.  He is a past President of the National Association of Bond Lawyers.  He has appeared as a speaker at numerous seminars and workshops on various financing topics.  Mr. Newton has been selected annually for a number of years as a member of The Best Lawyers In America and as a member of Georgia’s Top Rated Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in Georgia, and as a SuperLawyer.  He is also a member of a number of Who’s Who publications.

Originally from Griffin, Georgia, Mr. Newton graduated from Princeton University, magna cum laude, in 1977 with a degree in economics and received his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1980.  While in law school, Mr. Newton was on the Editorial Board of the Georgia Law Review and served as Executive Editor of the Georgia Law Review in his final year.  He was also a member of the Order of the Coif.
