Alan Dial is a partner in King & Spalding’s Washington, D.C., office. Mr. Dial’s practice focuses primarily on white collar criminal litigation, complex civil litigation, internal investigations, and compliance counseling. He has developed extensive experience litigating both criminal and civil cases at the trial and appellate level, as well as defending individuals and companies in prosecutions and investigations conducted by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and multiple divisions of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), including, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Antitrust Division.

Mr. Dial currently serves on various committees and strategic initiatives at the firm. He was formally the Deputy Hiring Partner for the Washington, D.C. office.

Mr. Dial left King & Spalding from 1998-2004 to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney in Atlanta and San Diego. As an AUSA, he tried and prosecuted various criminal cases involving corporate fraud, tax evasion, investment fraud, counterfeiting, money laundering and violent crimes. He had a distinguished career as a prosecutor, winning convictions in all his felony jury trials, including several lengthy, complex and high-profile federal prosecutions. He also represented the United States in oral argument before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth and Eleventh Circuits, served as lead counsel for the FBI anti-money laundering initiative and lectured on behalf of the Department of Justice to various foreign law enforcement officials on investigating and prosecuting financial crime cases.

Mr. Dial received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1988, where he also earned All-Star honors as a member of the football team and received the Paul Wellman Award for All-Around Excellence. Upon graduation, he went on to play professional football for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mr. Dial subsequently attended Howard University School of Law, earning his law degree, and graduating at the top of his class in 1993. Mr. Dial served as a member of the Howard Law Journal and was elected executive articles editor. An author and speaker on various criminal law topics, Mr. Dial is active in pro bono work, and served as a Board member of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia in 2015 and 2016.
