Summer Program Administration Back to Top The New York summer program is coordinated by our summer administrative team, which includes associates who monitor the workload for all of the summer associates, take the lead in summer associate training and assist with formal mid-summer and end of summer evaluations, as well as Drew Hruska, our hiring partner, and Jaclyn Tortora, our recruiting manager.
Summer Program Assignments Back to TopOur lawyers work in the following firmwide practice groups: business litigation, capital transactions and real estate, corporate, financial restructuring, finance, Middle East and Islamic Finance, intellectual property, real estate and special matters and government investigations. Our summer associates rotate through several of these practice groups during the summer. Each summer associate chooses the practice groups through which he or she will rotate in advance and may change rotation selections as the summer progresses.
Within each practice group, a subset of partners and associates act as their group’s “work coordinators.” The work coordinators manage assignments for all summer associates rotating through their group. Additionally, work coordinators ensure that the summer associates rotating through their practice group receive an overview of how the group operates, the work done by lawyers within the group and the types of projects one could expect to work on as a junior associate.
Summer Associate Training Back to Top All summer associates participate in orientation and training during their first week at the firm. In addition, all summer associates are encouraged to attend the various King & Spalding University and other internal training programs, which are geared toward practicing lawyers, as well as to the practice group.
Because of the importance of written work product to lawyers and clients, King & Spalding lawyers teach courses early in the summer program on improving legal research and writing skills. At these programs, summer associates learn techniques to make their writing as clear and compelling as possible.
Most importantly, our summer associates receive hands-on training by working closely with our lawyers on client matters, as well as observing closings, hearings, client meetings, negotiation sessions, depositions and trials whenever possible.
Summer Social Activities Back to Top The recruiting team and practice groups organize weekly social activities throughout the summer for our summer associates and lawyers. Summer associates are also frequently invited to enjoy lunches, dinners and other informal activities by individual lawyers.
