Class Size and Schools Represented    Back to Top
The Houston office hosted five students during our 2011 summer associate program from Ohio State, University of Houston and University of Texas law schools.

Our 2010 summer associate class included four students from Tulane, University of Houston, University of Texas and Wake Forest law schools.

Summer Program Administration    Back to Top
The Houston summer program is coordinated by Courtney Lundquist, our recruiting manager, who monitors the workload for all of the summer associates, coordinates all the in-house summer associate training, assists with formal mid-summer and end of summer evaluations and plans all social events for the summer calendar.

Summer Program Assignments    Back to Top
Summer associates may work with our  litigation, international arbitration, global transactions, healthcare or financial restructuring practice group, or some combination of those groups.  Practice group needs are typically discussed with summer associate candidates during the callback interview process.

Throughout the Houston office, associates are assigned as the practice group's work project coordinators. They coordinate assignments for all summer associates rotating through the practice groups. Additionally, the work coordinator ensures that the summer associates rotating through the practice groups get an overview of how the group operates, the work done by lawyers within the group and the types of projects one could expect to work on as a junior associate.

Summer Associate Training    Back to Top
The summer associates all participate in orientation and training during their first week at the firm. In addition, all summer associates are encouraged to attend the various King & Spalding University and other internal training programs, which are geared towards practicing lawyers, as well as to the practice group, office and firm meetings.

Most importantly, our summer associates are able to get hands-on training by working closely with our lawyers on client matters, as well as observing closings, hearings, client meetings, negotiation sessions, depositions and trials whenever possible.

Summer Advisors    Back to Top
Each summer associate is assigned one partner and one associate as summer advisors. The summer advisors act as their summer associate's liaison both socially and professionally, facilitating introductions, providing guidance on work assignments and acclimating them to the firm.

Feedback and Evaluations    Back to Top
Summer associates regularly receive informal feedback from the lawyers with whom they work throughout the summer. All summer associates are given formal mid-summer and end of summer evaluations by a partner on the Houston Hiring Committee.

Summer Social Activities    Back to Top
The recruiting manager organizes social activities throughout the summer for our summer associates and lawyers. Summer associates are also frequently invited to enjoy lunches, dinners and other informal activities by individual lawyers.

A few of our 2011 social activities included:

Private cooking class
Pinot’s Palette
Practice group section parties at partners’ homes
Bowling
Buffalo Bayou segway tour
Dinners and happy hours around town
Astros game
