Summer Program Administration    Back to Top
The Atlanta summer program is coordinated by Amy Miele, our recruiting manager, and Amy Marsh, our recruiting coordinator. They are responsible, along with our hiring partner and one mid-level associate we elect each spring as summer "czars," for the day-to-day operation of the summer program in Atlanta.

Summer Program Assignments    Back to Top
Summer associates in Atlanta rotate among practice groups, spending a minimum of two weeks in each group. The number of practice group rotations depends upon the number of weeks spent in the program. These practice groups typically include business litigation, capital transactions & real estate, corporate, financial restructuring, finance, healthcare, intellectual property, special matters and government investigations, tax and tort litigation & environmental. The work coordinators for each practice group are responsible for issuing assignments.

In addition, all Atlanta summer associates are encouraged to take on pro bono assignments during their summer clerkship. We believe this provides a unique opportunity for summer associates, while enhancing King & Spalding's existing commitment to pro bono work.

Summer Associate Training    Back to Top
All summer associates participate in orientation and training during their first week at the firm. In addition, all summer associates are encouraged to attend various training programs; practice group, office and firm meetings; as well as weekly luncheons on a variety of topics.

Because of the importance of written work product to lawyers and clients, King & Spalding lawyers teach a course early in the summer program on improving legal research and writing skills. At this program, summer associates learn techniques to make their writing as clear and forceful as possible.

Most importantly, our summer associates receive hands-on training by working closely with our lawyers on client matters, as well as observing closings, hearings, client meetings, negotiation sessions, depositions and trials whenever possible.

Summer Advisors    Back to Top
Each summer associate is assigned two summer advisors, a partner or counsel and an associate. The summer advisors act as their summer associate's liaison, both socially and professionally, by facilitating introductions, providing guidance on work assignments and acclimating them to the firm.

Feedback and Evaluations    Back to Top
Summer associates regularly receive formal and informal feedback from the lawyers with whom they work throughout the summer. All summer associates receive a mid-summer and an end-of-summer review by our summer czars.

Summer Social Activities    Back to Top
The recruiting team organizes social activities throughout the summer for our summer associates and lawyers. Summer associates are also frequently invited to enjoy lunches, dinners and other informal activities hosted by individual lawyers.

A few of our 2011 social activities included:

Day at Lake Burton, GA
Chastain Park outdoor concerts
Small and large parties at the homes of partners and associates
Braves baseball game at Turner Field
Happy hours
K&S Trivia Night
Viking Cooking School
