Bill Hoffmann became King & Spalding’s full-time pro bono partner on January 1, 2008, after 29 years of litigation experience, including 22 as a partner at the firm. In addition to litigating pro bono matters, he is responsible for developing and administering all the pro bono programs in the 400 lawyer Atlanta office and assisting and advising the pro bono chair in all offices. He is also responsible for coordinating pro bono matters staffed by multiple offices.

Mr. Hoffmann’s pro bono experience includes:

  • Successfully representing a 20-year-old Afghan asylum seeker whose mother was killed by the Soviets and his father killed by the Taliban.


  • Successful death penalty appeals in the Georgia Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.


  • Litigation resulting in the closing of a juvenile prison due to the failure to prevent inmate-on-inmate violence.


  • Litigating and settling two wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of the families of deceased prison inmates.


  • Litigation restoring Food Stamp benefits to Hurricane Katrina victims.


  • Taking statements from victims of Liberian Civil War and coordinating International Human Rights research for the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission.


  • Active asylum cases for refugees from political persecution by the Ugandan Internal Security Organization and by Rwandan Tutsis.


  • Constitutional challenges to lethal injection.


  • Settlement allowing Jewish prisoners to wear yarmulkes and have kosher meals.


  • Injunction against censorship of high school newspaper.
