Margrete Stevens is a consultant in King & Spalding’s Washington, D.C., office working on investment treaty claims with the firm’s International Arbitration Practice Group.
Prior to joining King & Spalding, Ms. Stevens worked as legal counsel at the World Bank Group’s International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), where she served from 1989-2007. From 2005-2007 Ms. Stevens served as Acting Lead Counsel, supervising the ICSID Secretariat’s administration of more than 100 investor-State arbitration proceedings including cases brought under bilateral investment treaties; NAFTA; and the Energy Charter Treaty. During that period Ms. Stevens was also responsible for the management of the 27 member Secretariat. Before joining the World Bank Group, Ms. Stevens served with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Botswana and Malaysia.
Ms. Stevens is a frequent speaker at conferences focusing on international investment law issues. Ms. Stevens has co-authored one of the leading textbooks on investment treaties - Bilateral Investment Treaties (Martinus Nijhoff 1995) - and has published on various topics related to the ICSID Convention and to investment treaties.
Ms. Stevens serves on the ADR Advisory Board of the International Law Institute in Washington, D.C. and on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration in Dallas. Ms. Stevens is also a member of the London Court of International Arbitration, the American Society of International Law and the International Bar Association.
Ms. Stevens holds degrees from the University of Copenhagen and the London School of Economics. She speaks English, Danish, Spanish and French.
