Jim Pardo is the senior partner and a member of the firm's Financial Restructuring Practice Group. He practices in King & Spalding's Atlanta office, and he concentrates his practice in the areas of bankruptcy and insolvency law, insolvency-related commercial litigation, and structured and non-structured corporate and financial transactions in which issues of bankruptcy or insolvency are present.

Mr. Pardo's practice is geographically diverse. Since January, 2000, he has represented creditors and parties in interest in such national and regional "mega cases" as:

  • United Air Lines, Inc. and Kmart Corporation in the Northern District of Illinois;
  • U.S. Airways, Inc. and ReturnBuy.Com, Inc. in the Eastern District of Virginia;
  • Pacific Gas & Electric Company and the Guy F. Atkinson Company in the Northern District of California;
  • Owens Corning, The Flintkote Company, Just for Feet, Inc., Beloit Corporation, LaRoche Industries, Inc., Darwin Networks, Inc., Fleming Companies, Inc., Lason, Inc., and Mariner HealthCare, Inc. in the District of Delaware;
  • Delta Airlines, Inc., Loral SpaceCom Corporation, Enron Corporation, WorldCom, Inc., Solutia, Inc., Allegiance Telecom, Inc., 360 networks (USA), inc., World Theater, Inc., and Hagerstown Fiber Limited Partnership in the Southern District of New York;
  • Horizon PCS, Inc. in the Southern District of Ohio;
  • Babcock & Wilcox Co. in the Eastern District of Louisiana;
  • EQK Realty Investors I, L.P. in the Middle District of Pennsylvania;
  • Mirant Corporation in the Northern District of Texas;
  • ASARCO, LLC in the Southern District of Texas;
  • Friedman's Inc. and Durango Georgia Paper Co. in the Southern District of Georgia;
  • Farmland Industries, Inc. in the Western District of Missouri; and
  • Citrico Holdings, Inc., RDM Sports Group, Inc., Flooring America, Inc., iPCS, Inc., The Gilbert & Bennett Manufacturing Company, MetroTrans Corporation, General Time Corporation, Custom Insurance Services, Mansour's, Inc., and Wolf Camera, Inc. in the Northern District of Georgia.

Mr. Pardo also represents debtors (particularly with regard to their pre-bankruptcy concerns), as evidenced by his current representation of Dan River Inc. and his prior representations of the A.H. Robins Company, Charter Medical Corporation and The Krystal Company. Mr. Pardo often serves as special counsel in appeals involving significant issues of bankruptcy law, as demonstrated by his successful appearances on behalf of General Motors Acceptance Corporation in the Busenlehner (Eleventh Circuit) and Hesser (Tenth Circuit) appeals and by his prior representations before the Supreme Court of the United States of amicus parties in Fidelity Financial Services v. Fink and Bank of America v. 203 North LaSalle Street Partnership.

Mr. Pardo frequently lectures on bankruptcy and commercial litigation topics before bar groups and in continuing legal education programs. He is a fellow in the American College of Bankruptcy, a former contributing editor of Collier on Bankruptcy and of the Collier Bankruptcy Manual, a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, a director of the Southeastern Bankruptcy Law Institute, and a past Chairman of the Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar of Georgia. During 1992, Mr. Pardo was a visiting Lecturer in Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, where he taught an advanced business reorganization course, and in 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2005 he served as an adjunct Professor of Law at the Emory University Law School. Mr. Pardo is among those lawyers selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America; Chambers' USA Guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business; EuroMoney's Guide to the World's Leading Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers; Law and Business Research's International Who's Who of Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers; Atlanta Magazine's Super Lawyers; and Georgia Trend Magazine's Legal Elite.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Virginia, Mr. Pardo received his B.A. with honors in economics in 1975 and his J.D. in 1979. During law school, he served as Managing Editor of the Virginia Law Review and was elected to membership in the Order of the Coif. Subsequent to law school and prior to joining King & Spalding, Mr. Pardo served as a visiting foreign lawyer in London, England, and as law clerk to Judge Charles Clark on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. Mr. Pardo is a member of the Bars of the Supreme Court of the United States and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fourth, Fifth, Eighth, Tenth and Eleventh Circuits.
