Tim Engel is a partner in King & Spalding’s Litigation & Antitrust and Energy Practice Groups in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Engel’s practice focuses on antitrust and complex commercial litigation as well as energy regulatory matters. He has represented clients across numerous industries in class actions, multidistrict and civil litigation involving allegations of price fixing, price discrimination, monopolization, market manipulation, unfair trade practices, patent misuse, breach of contract, fraud and RICO. He has presented seminars on antitrust compliance matters and has represented clients in merger investigations before the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission.

Mr. Engel’s energy experience includes representing oil and gas clients in cases ranging from upstream royalty disputes under the False Claims Act to downstream refined product pricing disputes under the antitrust laws. He has expertise in mineral resources regulations and regularly represents clients before the Department of the Interior Minerals Management Service and Bureau of Land Management. He represents clients in the natural gas and electric power industries involving allegations of market manipulation, including investigations by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the DOJ Antitrust Division. He has provided antitrust counseling to electric power clients and associations and has represented numerous nuclear plant owners in cases involving plant equipment replacement costs.

Mr. Engel received his B.A. in Economics from Georgetown University in 1978 and his J.D., magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, from Syracuse University in 1981. He served as Associate Editor of the Syracuse University School of Law Law Review in 1980-81. Prior to joining King & Spalding, Mr. Engel was with Howrey L.L.P. for twenty-five years where he was a partner in its antitrust group. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar.

  • Texaco Inc.—Numerous federal and state antitrust matters involving gasoline and other refined product pricing and distribution;

  • Multiple electric generating companies—Antitrust advice regarding electric power and capacity bidding markets;

  • Duke Energy—Commercial litigation involving replacement costs for nuclear plant equipment.
