NEW YORK, April 9, 2009 — Jeffrey M. Stein, a partner in King & Spalding’s corporate practice in Atlanta, has been named a winner of the 2009 Burton Awards for Legal Achievement. Stein was among 30 partners selected by the awards committee from among the largest 1,000 law firms in the nation.
Stein was chosen for his article “The Changing Role of the Lead Director.” The article appeared in the November/December 2008 edition of Corporate Governance Advisor.
Stein will be honored at an awards ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., on June 15. The guest speaker at the event will be U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia.
Robert D. Hays, Jr., chairman of King & Spalding, said, "We congratulate Jeff for this noteworthy personal achievement. This award not only acknowledges his excellence in legal writing, but also signifies Jeff’s dedication to enhance and enrich the legal profession."
The Burton Awards, now in their 10th year, were established by William C. Burton to promote and reward the refinement and enrichment of good legal writing. Winners are chosen by an academic committee consisting of educators from the law schools of Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania and University of Michigan, as well as leading members of the legal profession and the judiciary.
Stein advises public companies on matters related to Securities and Exchange Commission reporting and compliance, finance transactions and corporate governance. He has extensive experience in a range of public offerings and other corporate finance transactions, as well as swaps and derivatives. Stein played a leading role in the formation of the Lead Director Network, which brings together a select group of 20 lead directors, presiding directors, and non-executive chairmen from many of America's leading companies for private discussions about how to improve the performance of their corporations and earn the trust of their shareholders through more effective board leadership.
