2012 Legal 500: UK Rankings Swell as King & Spalding Continues London Expansion

RECOGNITION
LONDON, September 24, 2012 — In the latest edition of The Legal 500: UK, King & Spalding and its lawyers have earned five practice area rankings and 13 lawyer recommendations. In addition to retaining a top spot for Islamic finance, the firm improved its corporate, international arbitration and energy practices rankings, established a first-time ranking for commercial litigation and significantly increased the number of individual recognitions earned.

King & Spalding was again identified as a top-tier practice in the area of Islamic finance. Clients described the team as one that is “very responsive, has extensive industry knowledge, gives thorough and comprehensive advice, and is worth the money spent,” and Legal 500 editors praise the practice for its excellent record in structuring innovative Islamic finance deals. Jawad Ali and Michael Rainey are two of only 10 lawyers named to the publication’s list of “leading individuals” in the area, and Dubai-based partner Rizwan Kanji is also recommended.

In this year’s Projects, Energy and Natural Resources: Oil & Gas section, Legal 500 recognized the firm’s lawyers for having ‘years of experience between them’ and cited King & Spalding’s representation of ConocoPhillips on issues relating to JV-owned refining assets in the UK as particularly noteworthy. Garry Pegg -- who “understands all the different components from upstream concession ownership to downstream transportation and sales,” according to clients -- was recognized as an elite “leading lawyer” and Nina Howell also received individual acknowledgment.

Drawing particular praise for its expertise in the energy and natural resources sector in this year’s guide, the firm climbed to Tier 3 for M&A: Premium Deals, 250m+ and Martin Hunt was recommended as a top lawyer in the field. King & Spalding also moved up two spots in the International Arbitration section, with Legal 500 noting the significant contributions of “heavyweight arbitration lawyer” Tom Sprange, as well as more recent arrivals Jane Player and Sarah Walker.

Player and Walker, who joined King & Spalding from Bird & Bird in March 2012, were also recommended for commercial litigation, earning the firm a new ranking in that section of the UK guide. Both partners garnered three individual recognitions apiece, achieving further recommendations in the Insurance: Professional Negligence and Banking Litigation: Investment and Retail chapters, respectively.

The Legal 500 guides review the strengths and strategies of law firms in more than 90 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North and South America and the Caribbean. Researchers speak to thousands of law firm clients in order to identify the best law firms across the globe.
