King & Spalding Receives Pro Bono Award

30 May 2002
RECOGNITION

ATLANTA, May 30, 2002 -- King & Spalding received the S. Phillip Heiner Award from the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) at the Atlanta Bar Association’s annual meeting held on May 30. The firm received the award for its pro bono commitment to low-income individuals in Atlanta, and in particular, for leading the Eviction Defense Project and initiating the Emergency Services Personnel Will Project.

The Eviction Defense Project involves more than 70 King & Spalding lawyers under the leadership of Jeffrey S. Cashdan, Dan S. McDevitt and Ryan K. Walsh. Working in partnership with AVLF and Atlanta Legal Aid, these lawyers have defended indigent tenants in eviction proceedings held in Fulton County Magistrate Court. King & Spalding lawyers have represented these clients twice a week every month since last Summer in court-ordered mediations and trials.

The Emergency Services Personnel Will Project involves more than 20 King & Spalding lawyers under the leadership of Benjamin H. Pruett. Working in partnership with AVLF, volunteer lawyers prepare wills and related documents for Atlanta firefighters and their spouses, and the program will eventually expand to include police officers and other emergency services personnel as well. Pruett and AVLF have developed a training manual that will be distributed to local bar associations and volunteer organizations throughout the state who are interested in establishing similar programs. Pruett also initiated the Military Will Project last year, in which members of the Estate Planning and Probate Section of the Atlanta Bar Association drafted wills and related documents for reservists at Dobbins Air Reserve Base who were activated for deployment following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

This award and these two projects exemplify King & Spalding’s 117-year commitment to serving the community. Chairman Walter W. Driver, Jr. who accepted the Heiner Award on behalf of the firm stated, "At King & Spalding, we continue to dedicate our resources to serving the communities in which we practice. We celebrate these efforts because of our firm’s long-standing tradition of service."
