State Bar Of Georgia Recognizes King & Spalding LLP For Pro Bono Eviction Defense Program with 2003 William B. Spann Award

13 Jun 2003

ATLANTA, June 13, 2003 — The State Bar of Georgia honored King & Spalding LLP with its William B. Spann, Jr. pro bono award at its annual awards ceremony today. The Spann Award is given each year to an organization which has “developed a pro bono program that has satisfied previously unmet needs or extended services to underserved segments of the population.” King & Spalding earned the award for its Eviction Defense Project, which has assisted over 150 indigent tenants with their defense in eviction proceedings.

Since its inception, more than 100 King & Spalding lawyers have participated in the Eviction Defense Project. Partner Jeffrey Cashdan and associates Dan McDevitt and Tracy Braintwain lead the project, working in partnership with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and Atlanta Legal Aid.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, a team of King & Spalding lawyers represents tenants with eviction proceedings. This includes meeting with the client to determine the facts, mediating the case to attempt to reach a settlement, and, if that fails, trying the case in the Fulton County Magistrate Court.

“The Eviction Defense Project has filled a void in assisting clients who otherwise might not be equipped to defend themselves in eviction proceedings,” said Cashdan. “For many of these clients, the risk of losing their housing is the most important legal battle they will ever encounter. This project represents a continuation of King & Spalding’s long tradition of supporting its community through pro bono and service projects. We appreciate the State Bar of Georgia’s support.”
